Last night, I went into my garage and did what I wish I could have done twenty years ago. I took a carton full of one book I authored off the shelf and tossed it into the trash. (Recycle bin.) It’s not just because that particular book happened to tank. I’ve had a few of those. But this book was slightly wrong—not the story knew in my heart I had to tell. But the book I signed off on and started feeling sick about even before it went to print.
Maya Angelou famously wrote, “there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you.”
With deep respect, Maya, sorry. I found something greater.
It’s getting a story that’s been living inside of you out and then having it get you around the throat. It’s fiddling with it, back and forth, being afraid to say what you know is uniquely yours to say. Not being so sure what that is from the start. Watching more hours than you can bear to count go by. Losing money.
If it’s not a book, maybe it’s your keynote speech or brand story or proposal or that Dear John letter.
It’s not about being a perfectionist. You’ve poured your heart and soul into this. It’s getting honest and clear enough to feel the uncomfortable feelings that come up between you and the page. This stuff is difficult. For everybody.
Two major signposts:
You read it out loud and it doesn’t sound anything like you.
You know your story—but you can’t see what more importantly, also makes it “their” story.
What if after all of this struggling, all that was missing came down to a tweak? To get some clarity. To be reunited with your unique voice and story and get why they may matter to anyone else.
To get on with creating from new possibilities and choices again. So you can connect and convert to sales.
I recently worked with an author who is 9 months in on a second book. Stuck for 6 of those months. In an hour, we had the solution and tweak down to simply rewriting in present tense.
Which brings me to an offer I’m making here for the first time:
for 1 Hour or 30 minutes.
We’ll go deep in fast. We’re looking for the tweaks. The glitch in your voice or story you just can’t see straight yourself right now. The way in or maybe the way out. A little brainstorming.
If this sounds like what could be valuable to you now, e-mail me today.
In the subject line, put:
Tell me a little about what you’re working on and what you most want to get out of our time together.
I’ll get back to you with details.
I do have limited hours.
If you choose a session for 30 or 60 minutes, please consider this:
30 minutes goes by fast.
But then so does 6 months of telling the wrong story.
Thank you for reading!
